چکیده

This paper describes a work plan for the evaluation of the capabilities and performance of Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data for monitoring snow covered land surfaces, specifically in the boreal forest belt. The performance of MERIS over snow in the northern latitudes is mainly estimated by comparison of time series derived from MERIS surface reflectance against values derived from Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) Field Spec Pro JR data acquired over validation sites in Finland during the 2005 melting season. The purpose of this investigation is not to develop a snow-mapping algorithm but rather to identify generally applicable standard values for seasonally snow covered land cover reflectance and variability for improvement of existing algorithms. Accordingly, the goal is to evaluate and compare MERIS with airborne and ground-based validation spectra over typical boreal land cover types with various snow and weather conditions. Ground-based high accuracy hyperspectral data are valuable tools in detecting and specifying land cover spectral features and helping to identify them from coarser resolution satellite observations. The resulting estimates for temporal and spatial variability in spectra can be utilized to reduce errors in snow mapping algorithms in the Northern Hemisphere. The main potential for snow monitoring and limitations for the estimation of MERIS-derived standard variability for seasonally snow-covered surfaces are discussed in conclusion.

The Use of Meris Spectrometer Data in Seasonal Snow Mapping

The objective of this work is to evaluate the use of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data for seasonal snow cover monitoring specifically in the boreal forest belt. For this purpose, we tuned an existing method for fractional snow cover mapping in order to produce snow maps from MERIS imagery. The method was originally developed at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), wh...

محاسبه تغییرات نقشه‌های پوشش برفی تهیه شده از تصاویر ماهواره‌ای MODIS در دوره‌های فاقد تصویر

‏Snow is a huge water resource in most parts of the world. Snow water equivalent supplies 1/3 of the water requirement for farming and irrigation throughout the world. Water content estimation of a snow-cover or estimation of snowmelt runoff is necessary for Hydrologists. Several snowmelt-forecasting models have been suggested, most of which require continuous monitoring of snow-cover. Today mo...

Large-scale Forest Fires in Siberia Analysed by Modis, Meris and Aster Multiresolution Satellite Imagery

Exceptionally large fires were observed in Southern Siberia in 2003. Persistent cloud cover and orbit parameters did not allow observation of large areas with high resolution imagery shortly after the fires. Therefore we used a combination of high, medium and low resolution satellite imagery in which Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to record fire occurrence each d...

Monitoring Spring Phenology of Boreal Coniferous Forest in Finland Using MODIS Time-Series

The possibility for the extraction of spring phenological events of boreal evergreen forest from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) time-series was evaluated in this study. The beginning of the photosynthetically active period, determined from CO2 fluxes measured with the eddy covariance method, was used as primary reference for the onset of growing season (hereafter referred to a...
